Michael Bull is a highly respected odour and air quality specialist with a career spanning nearly four decades. Throughout that time he has worked on a wide range of environmental and planning projects across the UK, advising developers, consultants, regulators and legal teams on complex odour-related issues.

His expertise has developed through extensive practical experience across sectors including wastewater treatment, waste management, intensive livestock operations, commercial kitchens, food processing and industrial facilities, as well as assessing the suitability of sites for new residential development near existing odour sources.

Michael has long been closely involved in the development of professional guidance within the industry. He chaired the working group responsible for producing the Institute of Air Quality Management’s Guidance on Odours and Planning, helping to establish the framework that is widely used today in planning decisions across the UK.

Alongside consultancy work, Michael has contributed to professional research and publications. He was a contributing author to Designing with Smell, published by Routledge in 2017, which explores how sensory environments influence design and the built environment.

Over the course of his career Michael has worked with many leading planning consultants, environmental specialists and barristers, providing technical advice and expert evidence on complex odour matters.

Today he continues to provide independent, specialist consultancy on odour assessment, odour management and environmental planning issues, combining deep technical expertise with practical, clear advice for clients navigating planning, regulatory and legal processes.
