Michael Bull is one of the UK’s most experienced odour and air quality consultants, with over 38 years of specialist environmental consulting experience. He is a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Scientist and Chartered Environmentalist, and a Fellow of the Institute of Air Quality Management.
Michael is widely recognised for his expertise in odour assessment, odour management plans (OMP), air quality assessment and expert witness services. He chaired the working group that produced the influential IAQM Guidance on Odours and Planning, which is widely used in UK planning applications involving potential odour impacts.
Throughout his career, Michael has advised developers, local authorities, government bodies and infrastructure organisations on odour impact assessments, environmental planning, nuisance investigations and air quality management. His work spans a wide range of sectors including wastewater treatment, waste processing, intensive livestock farming, commercial kitchens, industrial processes and residential development near odorous sites.
Michael is also a highly experienced expert witness on odour and air quality, having provided evidence at more than 70 public inquiries, court cases, Development Consent Order hearings and Parliamentary committees.
In addition to consultancy work, Michael contributes to industry research and knowledge. He is a contributing author to Designing with Smell, published by Routledge.
With extensive technical expertise and involvement in shaping industry guidance, Michael provides authoritative and practical advice on odour assessment, odour management plans, air quality impacts and planning applications across the UK.
